A tip is to measure the PD several times to make sure it is consistent and therefore as accurate as possible.

The measured distance between the centers of your pupils is called PUPILLARY DISTANCE (or PD). This measurement is used to determine where to mount the lenses optical center and because of this the pupillary distance should be as accurate as possible.

The average PD of an adult is between 54-74 mm, while the average PD of a child is 43-58 mm.

• Millimeter ruler
• Mirror

1. Stand 8 inches (20 centimeters) away from a mirror

2. Hold the millimeter ruler against your eye brow

3. Align the ruler’s 0 mm with the center of your left pupil while holding your right eye closed

4. Looking straight ahead, close your left eye and open your right eye

5. The mm line that aligns with the center of the pupil in your right eye is your pupillary distance

FINAL NOTES

• Measure your PD at least 3-4 times to make sure that the measurement is correct. 
   
• The average adult measurement: 54-74mm
   
• The average child measurement: 43-58 mm
   

You can always ask a friend or family member to help you to measure your pupillary distance and if you do, think about these tips:

1. Make sure they are out of your field of vision, you can have them sit down or couch.
2. Don't move your eyes and try to stay as still as possible.
3. Pick a spot around 10-20 ft. (3-6 m) away, above their head and stare at it.
4. Don't look at the person measuring!
